THE FORKS TRAIL REPORT 3/18/08
Right around 3 feet of snow on the ground. The snowpack as well as the base on the trails are holding up very well, and our groomer operators report that there are no water problems. Generally speaking, the trails are in good shape with a flat and very hard base. Watch out for ice on some corners. For the remainder of this week, all 65 miles of The Forks Trail System will be groomed on each of Tuesday , Friday and Saturday nights, barring any breakdowns . We are grooming the intown trails twice on those nights, as they can get beat up with heavy traffic. Once just 1 mile out of town, things improve greatly. We will continue grooming throughout March, as weather permits. Looks like a great weekend for riding coming up!
ITS 86 FROM BERRYS STORE HEADING TOWARD GREENVILLE is in good shape, including the Power Line sections.
ITS 87 TOWARD BINGHAM has great riding. Great views of Moxie Lake and Bald Mountain.
PLEASANT POND TRAIL is in very good shape. Nice combination of scenic woods trails and wide open cruising!
BREAKNECK RIDGE TRAIL is open and groomed. This trail, the Pleasant Pond Trail, and ITS 86 make a great 90 mile loop between The Forks and Greenville.
KENNEBEC RIVER TRAIL is open all the way through, between Berrys Store and Northern Outdoors. Beautiful riding along the river!
With all the snow and no major warmup in sight, it looks like we will have good conditions throughout March. There is great on and off trail riding right now. This is a season to remember, so get out and enjoy it while it's here! Because of the deep snow in the woods, there are a lot of animals using the trails to get around. Numerous moose, deer, coyotes and turkeys have been spotted on the trails, both day and night. KEEP THE SPEED DOWN AND RIDE WITH CAUTION AT ALL TIMES!
WEST FORKS/PARLIN POND TRAIL REPORT 03/13/08
Forks Area Recreation (F.A.R.) Club
Although there is plenty of snow in whole Forks area, spring is trying to show itself by creating some water holes as melting begins. Use extreme caution for a large & deep water hole behind Berry's General Store on ITS86 near the intersection of ITS87. We have tried to divert the water to "drain the swamp", but some still remains as water continues to flow into it. Remaining towards the edges of the hole will keep you on "dry land" through most of it. Use caution. There's ample snow on all trails to last for several more weeks and with the onset of warmer weather & longer days, riding still is good. Just use caution on all trails to be aware for emerging water holes.
ITS 86 FROM BERRY'S STORE TO GRAND FALLS/EUSTIS: Open, groomed as of Wednesday night, 3/12. Trail is in good shape and will be groomed throughout the weekend. No major hazards.
ITS 87 FROM BERRY'S STORE TO RT 15 JACKMAN/ROCKWOOD: Open, will be groomed for the weekend and throughout the weekend as needed. No major hazards, but use caution through the stretch called "Grover's Hole" - about midway between the Enchanted spur trail and the Capital Rd crossing. The sides of that area, outside the groomed trail, are soft with deep mud underneath...stay on hardpack groomed trail and there should be no problem.
ITS 89 FROM SPENCER STREAM TO COBURN MT TO SPENCER RD/JACKMAN: Closed in areas over about 2000' elevation, pass at your own risk using extreme caution. A severe ice storm occurred last weekend in the higher elevation areas of ITS89, north of the Bull Dog spur trail from a few miles south of Coburn Mountain and up over the Coburn "shoulder". Heavy ice-covered branches hang into the trail making it impassable for groomers and barely passable for sleds. If you go this way, you may find yourself crashing through curtains of icy branches so go SLOWLY and wear a good helmet! A work crew is going out Thursday, 3/13 morning to try and open things back up. If enough work is accomplished, the entire trail will be open for the weekend; otherwise, sections will remain closed to pass at your own risk.
SHUT DOWN LOOP: Open.
NORTH RD CONNECTOR FROM ITS 87 TO ITS 89: Closed for the season due to plowing.
RED BUCK CONNECTOR ITS 87 TO ITS 89: The connector trail from ITS 89 to Red Buck is closed due to logging (the only access to Red Buck is now from ITS 87). The connector from ITS 87 to Red Buck remainds open and is being groomed on a regular basis.
ALPINE TRAIL SYSTEM: Open, but will not be groomed on Thursday as normally scheduled due to the higher priority work effort in progress to reopen ITS89. Trail still is in fairly decent shape though and provides nice riding with great views.
ENCHANTED LOOP TRAIL from ITS 86 to U.S. Route 201 (west side) is Closed due to a bridge out. The section from ITS 87 to U.S. Route 201 (east side) is open.
